A.J. Cruz
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETE RELATIONS
A.J. Cruz was named ISA’s Director of Athlete Relations in 2022. As a former professional athlete and client of ISA, A.J. brings a wealth of knowledge on the numerous transitions that take place over an athlete’s career. A.J. will bring a focused energy to two main components of our client maintenance program: making the mental transition from college to professional ranks and beginning the post career conversation while a client is navigating their pro career.
A.J. attended high school in southern California where he excelled on the football field and in the classroom. Due to his outstanding work ethic he was offered the once-in-a lifetime opportunity to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. While a freshman at Brown, A.J. cracked the starting line up as a Cornerback in week 3 of the season. He went on to start every game thereafter. In his 4 years at Brown he was an All-Ivy League DB selection every year with an additional All-American selection his senior year. A.J. earned his B.A. in Business, Entrepreneurship & Organizational Studies.
After his decorated NCAA career A.J. did not initially receive any opportunities in the NFL. He took part in free agent workouts and open tryouts for the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League. His first pro contract came with the Los Angeles Kiss of the AFL in 2014. In 2015, he signed with the AFL’s Arizona Rattlers and had a breakout performance including 8 return TD’s in 11 games.
Following his exceptional 2015 season, A.J. was offered a contract in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. After his brief stint with the Bears, A.J. then signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2016. His time in Miami was abbreviated by injury and forced A.J. to sit down and make some difficult career decisions. After much thought and deliberation, it was prudent to explore an opportunity to hit the field in the Canadian Football League in order to gain the experience needed to develop his game. A.J. signed with the Calgary Stampeders in 2017 and the Edmonton Eskimos in 2018. After two up-and down seasons, battling injuries it was time to think about the next steps in life after football.
